Doesn't anyone else have a role in this? Where is Europe? Where is the UN?

Great power and great wealth are a responsibility. We are the only superpower in the world at the moment. We have the responsibility to protect those assets so that they are not squandered, pilfered, or seized. We also have a responsibility to make use of the power and wealth we have obtained in beneficial ways. At the policy level it is pretty much a forced choice to use it or lose it, use it in constructive and beneficial ways or in a destructive and rapacious manner.

on the surface this sounds acceptable, but i think it has been the trend more and more for nations to abrogate their responsibilities with the knowledge that uncle will supplant their shirking

your statement of policy almost can be reduced to:

from each according to his abilities, to each according to his needs

well yes, we have great abilities and resources....but that does not mean we should spread them thin because other so called allies refuse to take the hard steps necessary for providing for their own defense.

i believe that nations, like individuals should rise to their level of expectation, and if we put little or no expectation on them for their fair share of world 'policing' then you arrive at what we have today, the US spread far and wide over 130 countries in police officer mode

an unsustainable burden, imo, on the american taxpayer and our military personnel
