"It doesn't seem rational to me that we should bankrupt ourselves for some greater good that no one else recognizes or appreciates."

1. We aren't bankrupting ourselves. That's nonsense.
2. Did we learn nothing from the 20th century? We cannot just sit here inside our borders, watching the latest totalitarian wave (Islamo-Fascism) rip the world apart, and expect to be safe from it or to never have to confront it. Just as the two World Wars were never "just a European problem", Islamo-Fascism is not "just a middle-eastern problem." Totalitarianism is everyone's problem, whether they choose to ignore it, appease it or confront it.

All that is necessary for the triumph of evil is that good men do nothing.

"The things you are saying are noble but It doesn't seem rational to me that we should bankrupt ourselves for some greater good that no one else recognizes or appreciates. Once bankrupt, there will be little enough that we can do for ourselves much less anyone else."
