Pelosi, Dean, Reid, they are the leadership of the democrats. "demonization of the other" is their stock and trade.

President Bush and the republican leadership does not engage in "demonization of the other" Unless the other are actual terrorists.

As long as democrats accept such whacked out individuals as leadership, Rush Limbaugh will have lots of agreeable fun and talk in an agreeable fashion from liberals will continue to be extinct.

I still think it's possible to talk, in an agreeable fashion, about even fundamental disagreements.

I have spent a lot of time pondering this since I've experienced it on SI. I really prefer talking to people with whom I have differences. I'm interested in learning their take and sharing mine. I don't think that many people enjoy differences. So I've given some thought to what makes me an outlier (something that life gives me lots of opportunities to do <g>).

What I notice in people who come at this differently than I do is that they are either partisan or emotional or both. I am neither. I don't know which of those or if either of those is key. I was impressed by some study that got a lot of attention a while back that found that people, once having joined a party, tended to change their views to conform rather than holding on to their individuality. Lotsa pressure in partisanship to drive out heresy.
