other is up 40k from 2000 to 2004 and total is down 2k from 2000 to 2004.

Wonder why they (NYT) are down on both daily and Sunday circulation from both 2001 and 2002??? The Sunday rate is the day the papers all care about....it's what makes their basis for their advertising rate. Internet was certainly a fact of life in 2001 an 2002, so that shouldn't be it.

Any idea of why they are so far down in their numbers....?

Could it be they have just alienated about 50% of their potential client base by their lopsided slant?
