"We never even made it to Vietnam in any of our history classes... it was in the curriculum, but we always ended up finishing behind schedule."

My sample size is admittedly pretty small. My oldest informed me that "all the teachers" told him that we were winning in Vietnam. I also had a prof., from South Korea, say the same in class. I told my oldest that if his teachers said that, they were wrong. I gave the prof. a pass, although it was very tough...

While I missed Vietnam by only a few months, I got to know several veterans. Most notable was a Green Beret and a poor shlub who spent part of his tour on the back of a tank in the Highlands and the rest of his tour as a door gunner on a Huey. All of these occupations had a mortality rate that rivaled American bomber crewmen during WWII, i.e. they were outliers in their ability to actually have a voice instead of just a number. And no, I never questioned their claims, although their reluctance in telling stories tended to back them. People who actually see action tend to be reluctant to brag about it.

Both spent several years drifting and doing drugs until they decided to make a better life for themselves. The Green Beret was working security for a condo when he was beat to death by a whacko with a tire iron. The other guy became a minor wheel at Midas Muffler. Such are the hands that life deals...

I also thought that Presidents couldn't be bad people and that elections were about who was most qualified to be President. I didn't know from different ideologies.

I thought the same think. I was blow away when I saw Reagan had been supporting Saddam with weapons and aid during his war with Iran. I knew Nixon had done some criminal things but they pale in comparison to Reagan's aiding and abetting of a tyrant. And what's most amazing is that many Americans think Reagan is a god.
