Some scientists have done some work out from the theory, that the solid skin of Earth, which is believed to float on a more liquid foundation underneath, could under certain conditions skid on those somewhat slippery layers below.
Furthermore, so this theory, given certain weather changes extreme ice masses could amass on the poles and thus cause a loss of balance of the rotating globe and that this could cause such conditions to occur.
Thus the crest could start sliding around on the globe below until it found a new mutual equilibrium.

Applying this theory to known historical facts, like fossilized tropical life in the Antarctic and more they even believe such Earth crest correction events could even have occurred on Earth.

Voila, here you have a possibly physical explanation of the lost day or even the possibility of a counter rotation!
