Bush was lying to the senate in the first senate hearings on Iraq. The evidence has come out that Pat Roberts helped Bush-Cheney-Rumsfield-Rice snooker the senate just as they snookered many in the public and UN. Of course, men like Kerry had their deep suspicions, and maybe Biden did too, but what were they going to do, call the president a liar? Bush-Cheney basically stated that they had intelligence showing Saddam had an active nuclear program plus scads of WMD and Al Qaida ties. All of this was untrue or vastly exaggerated. But we only learned that later. Remember also, in 2002, Bushies used the fear of Saddam and the rush to war as a way to fool the public into supporting them for the mid-terms, to label war heros like Max Cleland "traitors" for not rubber-stamping Bush's demands, and it was a very different political climate. Quite soon after 9-11 too when we all remember being united.
