Rift widens in response to Sheehan By Robin Miller/City Editor The divide over the ongoing protest by a Vacaville woman camped near President Bush's Texas ranch continued to widen Tuesday as her supporters announced a candlelight vigil and her detractors made plans to caravan to her campsite to voice their opposition to her efforts. Cindy Sheehan, the 48-year-old mother of a soldier killed in Iraq last year, has been camped near the ranch since Aug. 6, vowing not to leave until she gets a face-to-face meeting with Bush. On Tuesday, Moveon.org announced candlelight vigils in communities across the nation and Vacaville supporters plan to participate. "We are planning a silent, candlelight vigil in front of Vacaville City Hall," read an e-mail Tuesday to The Reporter from the local vigil organizers. The event is set to begin at 7:30 tonight and will last about 45 minutes. "We are asking (participants) to bring their own candles, making them windproof and safe by inserting them in empty tin cans with holes punched for air and so the light will shine through," the group noted. Meanwhile, a group of military families who support U.S. efforts in Afghanistan and Iraq announced they will caravan from Sacramento to Crawford starting Monday in what they are calling the "You Don't Speak for Me, Cindy" tour. Move America Forward, a conservative, nonprofit Bay Area group, is organizing the caravan. The goal of the caravan is "to present an alternative voice to that of Cindy Sheehan, who has become the heroine of the 'Blame America First' crowd," according to an announcement from the group. "The truth is that the men and women in the military and their families are the strongest supporters of the war on terrorism, and they do not agree with the message or antics of Cindy Sheehan. Their voices must now be heard." The caravan will be headed by Deborah Johns, a Roseville resident and founder of Northern California Marine Moms. It will stop in Vacaville briefly before heading to San Francisco for a press conference and then heading to Texas. "Cindy Sheehan doesn't speak for me, nor does she speak for any of -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Advertisement -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- the military families that I have been involved with," Johns said in a press release Tuesday. "I am deeply sorry for Ms. Sheehan's loss; however (her) actions are only causing pain to those of us who have loved ones serving in the war against terrorism. We understand the need to fight the terrorists overseas rather than face attack here at home." Johns' son, William, is serving in Iraq. "We understand that it was the terrorists led by al-Qaida in Iraq who are responsible for the deaths of U.S. service members, including Casey Sheehan," Johns said. Once in Crawford, Johns along with Move America Forward co-founder and conservative radio talk show host Melanie Morgan plan to lead a "We support our troops and their mission" rally Aug. 27. "The tragedy of Cindy Sheehan's misbegotten mission is that she is hurting the troops with whom her courageous son Casey served," Morgan said. Noting that she recently visited troops in Iraq, Morgan said the soldiers she spoke to told her that efforts by the anti-war movement endanger them. "They said every time there is a splash in the media by the anti-war left in this country, there are more IEDs that explode because the terrorists realize they can't win this war on the ground they can only win by making America lose its nerve," Morgan said. Morgan said she's hoping to speak directly to Sheehan in Texas. "I will say what I've been saying on the radio for some time," Morgan said. "I will tell her that her anti-military remarks are hurtful and demoralizing to our troops in Iraq."
