If I have a factory in China making something for me employing nothing but Chinese for a product that will only be distributed in China and the profits from that venture flows to me, it is included in the GNP but not in the GDP.

I don't think so. The product (minus the profits) is part of Chinese GNP, the profits (if it is wholly owned by a US company) are part of the US GNP.
