Rumsfeld met Saddam in 83 and 84 during Reagan. Then Saddam gassed the Kurds in 88 and invaded Kuwait in 90. Rumsfeld returned and now Saddam is out of business.

When Rumsfeld met Saddam (thus shaking his hand), he was a private citizen. He had no more authority over our military then than you do today.

By the way, when Dan Rather shook Saddam's hand during his interview in 2003, did you think they were buddies? Just wondering?
