OT - To me the hazards of travel underscore the value of quality travel organizations. Even when we travel on our own we usually make our arrangements through a travel consultant that specializes in the region we will visit, knows the safety records of local airlines, warns of places to avoid, etc. Even crossing the street presents a risk to personal safety, but we deal with it by doing things, like looking both ways, to minimize the risk.

Once, on a small group tour of Indochina, we were delayed by 12 hours because the airline had switched the equipment on our flight from a French plane to a Russian plane that did not have an air worthiness certificate! I doubt a lesser organization or us as individuals would have caught that last minute switch. As it turns out, of course, both flights reached the destination safely, but none of us complained about the delay.

Getting in a plane is always infinitely safer than the car ride to the airport. That's easy to prove with statistics.

But it doesn't make for a sexy headline.
