i tried several ways, here are a few described:
1) PC powers off, docking off: make connection then power up
docking: pc can NOT power up
2) PC power on(batteries), docking power on: slide pc onto
docking, PC off
at once. Try to start by push power on from docking, it
clicks OFF after few seconds
3) PC power on(batteries), slide onto docking, as soon as
closing the
laptop to make use of the external monitor, power OFF at
once

here is the answer from SOFTEXINC:

The Softex Docking Software is designed strictly for Windows NT only. Windows XP shold load the drivers for the docking station on it's own according to Dell. You may want to go to www.support.dell.com and look up to see if they have anyth8ing for your computer for XP. I know they used to have a saoftware called quickdock or quickinstall that was used on windows 2000 to replace docking services software.

It's apparently not supported by Dell for use with WinXP, i.e., no drivers/software available from them. You might try the original distributor softexinc.com and see if they offer anything.

Edit - Looking over the Softex site, it doesn't appear that they offer anything for WinXP. Maybe it's not even required under XP. I've never missed it on my Inspiron 3800 with XPSP2 (unsupported upgrade from Win9x), but those use port replicators, rather than docking stations like the Lat series..

The key passage in the message from the Softex rep is this: Windows XP (should) load the drivers for the docking station on it's own

Indeed. XP has much more native functionality for peripherals and hot swapping than previous versions. Near as I can figure from my I3800, the only thing I'm missing is a "Softex" entry in Program Files. Everything else works fine. I'll be loading XP Pro on a Lat C600 in the next day or so, and testing same for docking/peripheral functionality, but I anticipate that XP will provide anything that's needed. Have you tried plugging the CPx into the dock, and waiting for the New Hardware Wizard to do it's thing? That should be all that's required.
