They have proven to be one of the most dangerous forms of transportation, if not the most. How are you supposed to get the groceries home on a bicycle? Did you forget that most people live more than a mile from the local Kroger? I hardly think the soccer moms in their Expedition are trying to make a status symbol. Everything you say is so freaking negative. Don't you ever grow tired of your bitter sarcasm and resentment? The outlook for oil has more to do with competition from China and India than egotistical mothers taking their kids to school in their family SUV. Driving is going to become a privelege again in our society. Fewer kids are going to go to college and fewer kids are going to get a set of keys tossed to them. The only problem is going to be how to get these kids out of the house once they are 18. Parents may end up realizing they will be responsible for their children much longer. You can't just toss them out on the street and call them irresponsible because they can't afford car payments, insurance payments, gas payments, rent payments, utility payments, and all the other luxuries of being a post adolescent. There are plenty of new oil supply ready for the market. However, that doesn't mean it will be coming our way. China and India will be grabbing whatever oil supplies they can get their hands on. China may have walked away from Unocol, but they will be looking hard for any investment they can make outside of the US. The problems in the US are hardly a function of Bush being an oil man. I would like to see the government do more to encourage hybrid engines in the way of massive tax subsidies to encourage the big 3 to start making fuel efficient vehicles. One thing is for sure, the technology won't be coming out of Europe or the ME. Our biggest hope in the technology war continues to be our Asian allies, especially Japan. I hope that Honda and Toytota step up to the plate and deliver some high performance vehichles that can maintain at least 30 mpg. The days of complacency will be replaced with sudden and drastic change in technology - I hope.
