Political families don't persist for too long without wealth whereas mercantile dynasties do (the Boston Brahmins have been around for centuries). Mediocrity in a single generation will wipe out the political family. Money is the surest cornerstone for without it a family is never entirely independent...

On Political Dynasties

Interesting there have been four american families to have produced two presidents en.wikipedia.org

The adams, roosevelts, bushes and the harrisons. harisson grandfather was the 9th prez and his grandson was the 23rd... these american political dynasties are quite entrenched as it is; the brahmin boston families are worth studying bostonmagazine.com

Contrast this to the Philippines where 73% of the democratically elected congressman are second-, third- or fourth-generation politicians.

The Irish Catholic fertility of the Kennedy's has probably reduced the third and fourth generations trust fund to upper middle class standards, reasonable enough but nothing for them to maintain their preeminence as the nation's first family.

The purpose of a great family is not merely to ensure the prominence of each generation but to so define the nation or community that they live in. Their legacy must be one of the nation/community's defining charateristics, if so then only could a great family be considered truly immortal; otherwise they have no choice but to toil through the generations.
