Conservation could have reduced energy demand and prices

As if reduced energy demand was a rational goal. Increased efficiency and increased supply (if necessary) probably did not cross their minds. (It does not fit their ideology).

BTW, New York Times was the most zealous about closing a newly built nuclear plant at Shoreham, NY. Their ideology required them to. Their complaints about oil prices may seem a little inconsistent - but for ideological zealots, consistency is not required.

while properly targeted job growth and savings incentives - not tax cuts for the rich - could have built a stronger job recovery

I wonder if there is a single problem in the universe that, according to NY Times could not be solved by increasing taxes on the "rich"...
