We don't have to decide... I'm not talking about regulating pay scales. I'm talking about a small amount of income redistribution to make sure that the janitor doesn't starve.

The market will decide that (though the market can be manipulated by government). The government just decides how much of the income that you and people that make as much money as you is redistributed to make sure that people that didn't cure cancer don't live on the streets, still leaving you with a really good life. If the government takes 40% of your 10 million dollar a year income and redistributes that, you still come out 6 million ahead.
