Patriotism is love of country.

That's right. And people whose basic axiom is that "America is the root of all evil," the Chomskyites, for instance, don't.

If you don't like the Pledge of Allegiance; if you wouldn't be caught dead with an American Flag pin in you lapel; if you think hanging a flag out on the 4th of July is tacky; don't tell me about your "patriotism."

CB,

Dissent is essentially American. Treason and sedition are not.

Its one thing to differ with any administration, its quite another to wish for a million Mogadishu's or directly cheer the deaths of American servicemen.

When dissent goes over the line to sedition it is no longer protected and is no longer American.

The trouble with our liberals is that they view those they disagree with as evil and hence their reaction to cheer those who oppose us - even terrorists.

John

I wonder do you join in condemning the characterization of dissent of an individual like Pipes as sinister and Un-American with posts of No chapter, no verse and no logic.

Suggesting suppressing other free speech is to me sinister and Un-American.

Patriotism is love of country.

I spent a bit of time searching for an essay that better describes patriotism than the chauvinism that is now so dangerous. I haven't found one. If you or anyone else has one, please either post it here or send it to me in private e-mail.
