"Some balance benefits us all, rich or poor. It makes for a better, safer, more moral society... for everyone, top to bottom." That is the thing. So many social things are better. People are more pleasant. You have less random crime. You don't have as many predators out there. And so on. Everybody feels they have a stake in things, and aren't as interested in gaming the system. But, hey, that smacks of socialism and that makes it bad...
