I don't care whether Bush cares about his poll numbers. Yes, I realize he is not running for anything, also. However, the Republican party definitely cares about Bush's poll numbers. The Republicans want to maintain their majorities in Congress. And it is very hard to continue to fight a war when the majority of the American public does not support it. Also, even though Bush is not running for anything, he is concerned with his place in history. He bet really, really big on a strategy that seems to be a big loser, and has never really developed other parts of his presidency or been successful at plans like reforming Social Security. So unless he can somehow straighten out the mess in Iraq, he is a big loser, and I bet he cares about that.
