I just don't see how that might make me understand myself better

Okay, I'll show you how.

I will assert that if Truman was found to have said what was in my post, you would react something like this:

See, I told you so! All along Truman was thinking of Russia and about becoming a superpower. Now we have it in his very own words! It is now A PROVEN FACT what his REAL motive was.

I will leave It for other readers to decide if I am right about what you would say.

Now here's my point: Truman HAS spoken of his motive -- many times. For example:

"It occurred to me that a quarter of a million of the flower of our young manhood were worth a couple of Japanese cities, and I still think they were and are."

"I'll say that we'll end the war a year sooner now, and think of the kids who won't be killed! that's the important thing."

In these two quotes, you don't believe Truman. You insist he was dissembling to conceal his real motive. But you would believe him totally if he had said the words that I made up, because they are the words you would like to hear.

In other words, you will readily believe Truman if he admits a motive that looks bad for our country, but you won't believe him if he explains a motive less devious than the one you prefer.

Truman is a lying s.o.b. if he says something you don't want to hear, but a paragon of truth if he says something you do want to hear.

I think that should tell you something about yourself, where you are coming from, and about YOUR motives.
