"If a majority of sexually active women have at least one strain of HPV, a prostitute must be like an HPV buffet."

I don't think that logically follows. It is true that most women have one or another strain of the virus; but at least (in regulated prostitution) the women are trained professionals with constant support and health care from other trained professionals.

It would seem that HPV is simply a fact of life. We cannot keep every pebble out of our shoes. I suspect that SERIOUS and preventable STD's are less prevalent amongst regulated hookers than amongst the general population--but I do not know it for a fact. I have already stated the obvious: monogamy is the best prophylactic against STD's. But a car accident before the age of ten is also the best prophylactic against horrible death via cancer or other such. I don't say that to be facetious. In this real world we are all beset by desires and needs and circumstances. Just as I do not argue for abortion...I do not argue for prostitution. But I do not think voluntary transactions between competent adults are any business of the morality police. And I think that social prudishness and snobbery contributes to the lack of alternative resources for "street" prostitutes who are only trying to survive. And by criminalizing these people we (as a society) are spreading HPV (and far far worse)--we are spreading it amongst people who are totally innocent. Would you rather have a man come back from a Nevada brothel to resume relations with his partner...or would you rather he get it in the alley from a crack addict who is stoned 20 out of 24 hours and full of disease--and cannot get any social support because she is ILLEGAL?

This web site is rather informative, I think. It certainly supports what you have suggested to some degree. If I were to have sex with a woman I was not truly interested in as an ongoing partner, I think I would feel safer with a regulated prostitute. I say this because the web site I'm referencing makes it clear that 80% of women (at age 50) have acquired HPV infection. And I think that the professional sex agents are more likely to know the state of their health and the best methods of protection. A housewife who has likely had one or more affairs with people who have had affairs with one or more etc etc and of course her husband who has etc etc...

Well...you see what I mean? To have sex with a crack addict who could care less whether she lives or dies and probably prefers the latter--not a rational option. But millions of people are doing it and that is my point. I don't know if you see my point or not, but it has to do with taking the sin out of sex, and either giving the dead and the dying an alternative to degradation and misery...or having a social conscience and helping them to preserve their health--and the health of millions of innocent people at third, fourth, and seventy-ninth remove?

Even if one does NOT believe these kids are innocent...one cannot pretend that the many who are far removed (but are still given diseases) are ALSO guilty--at least in this narrow approach to the concept.

We will never get rid of viruses...but we can certainly have a little compassion for people.
