Second, I'm very tolerant of other people's religious beliefs - as long as there is separation of church and state.

I will refer you again to your friend Shiller and his observations of church and state:

Cultural variables seem to explain a lot: religion and politics accounted for about half of the variation across municipalities. Municipalities tended to have more entrepreneurs if they had a high proportion of pensioners who were members of the Church of Sweden (the official state church until 2000) and a high proportion of right-wing voters.

Beyond that, a feedback mechanism appears to be in place: cities with more entrepreneurs tend to beget still more entrepreneurs. Once an entrepreneurial culture takes root, it typically spreads locally, as people learn about business and begin to feel attracted by it – even if it doesn’t yield an immediate or certain payoff.

Religion in government only "stabilizes a country" by curtailing personal freedoms - in this case women's rights will be especially hard hit. See this editorial comic:

Calculated, you are a smart guy, Mauldin even talks to you - hehe - so I give you that - but I take issue with you trying to over simplify the squashing of bad memes - there are violent ways to squash bad memes that get women beat up - and there are non violent ways that may take a little longer but don't get people killed and beat up - I know you want the more peaceful way right - even if maybe it slower?

Now there is an article on wifebeating in africa - very bad problem - worse than any other country - many deaths - even women propagating the evil means of beating other women - now MIK over at the pkarchive board - a south african economist - says until about 15 years ago the beatings were not like they have gotten the past 15 years - he made comments that trying to move the people so fast to new ideas created a lot of counter culture types and entrenched them more into the bad memes we all want to squash. Rome was not built in a day. If you demand everything right now from those in IRAQ and it entrenches the counter culture like MIK is saying happened in south africa - you just gonna get more people killed eh? Sometimes you snatch power away slow slow slow - fast snatches cause people to die maybe? We are emotional creatures, not far removed from animals, and most people are in their ruts, you can't change the world overnight - takes time - what do you suggest we do to get women and men equal over there in the most productive way?
