There is a reason why Republicans have fought a war against environmentalism all these years. It's not as simple as the old hollow economic arguements that environmental protection hurts the economy (a bunch of baloney as the economy has grown tremendously since we passed the environmental laws in the early 1970s). It's much deeper than that. It is because they realize that environmentalism offers the only viable alternative to their wealth driven way of life.

We're at the point now, in 2005, where we could seriously reduce our consumption of oil by turning to hybrid technology and electric cars. Electricity could be made from renewables in a much bigger manner than we currently do. The costs of renewables is coming down with each passing year and their efficiency is growing. It's now just a matter of will, the technology is no longer the limiting factor. The problem is kicking our oil habit will end all the fun. The most profitable industry in the history of mankind will become irrelevant. Like they're going to just roll over and let that happen. Hell no, they've fought a war against alternative energy for decades. That's why the oil companies brought out the solar industry in the late 1970s and why the Reagan Adminstration cut funding for renewables by 80% in the early 1980s. That's why in 2005 we only take tepid steps towards renewables, when in reality we could cut our oil conumption in half over the next decade by adopting hybrids across the board.

They have no interest in promoting an alternative to the consumption society.
