The SUNW board isn't "mine," although I'm a fairly heavy poster there. There are a few boards that _are_ mine -- one of the alternative Microsoft boards (started when I was banned from the big one because I challenged the accepted "wisdom"), one about guitar playing (rarely posted to), and, as I recall, some other obscure ones that even I don't have bookmarked.

I haven't followed SGI since I sold the position I once held, so I'm in no position to speculate on their worth to others. The last time I looked, my impression was that they were getting much too involved with the Itanium camp, which I expect to ultimately fail. Itanium just doesn't have a compelling enough story to overcome POWER, SPARC, and (even) X86 (especially now that the Opteron has appeared). That same Itanium focus would probably make it unattractive as an acquisition to both IBM and Sun.

Anyway, IBM seems to me to be going off in a different direction now from their traditional role -- they seem more a services and finance company, and less a hardware company. So I don't know why they'd be interested in SGI.

But that's all JMHO.
