That truth of that observation is yet another reason for getting out now. I don't think we want to either kill the number of them necessary to make them blood sick enough to do what we want. If we aren't willing to rain death on the lot of them, (and let fate separate the guilty from the innocent,) then the ankle-biting war we're fighting will very quickly convince us to quit. Because no matter how the hawks spin it, when you have to try hard to find a reason for killing and dying in a foreign land, you shouldn't be there and you won't stay long.>>

The war on terrorism will continue, with the US leading or near the front.
The world economy, with the US being major part of that, is at serious risk.
Cannot afford to have the airlines, buses, trains, high-rises threatened on a daily basis.
Cannot afford to leave 22 percent of the world oil production in the hands of of an unstable country while Kurds, Sunnis, and Shiites fight it out for control.

The direction taken by the US in Iraq is very clear and open, we stay until the new government learns to control and overcome local terrorism.
Saddam encouraged feudalism, kept groups separate, rewarded leaders with money, arms, and the right to kill or torture.
They need years to learn democracy and some way to work and live more peacefully. We cannot immediately transpose our ideas on people with such diverse background and ideals.
They will need to experiment, try things in small ways, if it works then expand the idea.

The US maintains a powerful military, if not to fight for our way of life, for what purpose do they exist?
Should we wait until OBL or other terrorist group attacks for the umpteenth time before recognizing the magnitude of the threat?

Forty years after WW11 how many of the 265,000 troops in Germany were being killed by German insurgents and killing Germans to "help" them?

I think the more pertinent question is how many GI's were being killed just after hostilities ceased.
I recall that the last official US WWII KIA in Germany, was listed as killed in 1949...may have been 48.
And that did not end it.

I recall numerous other incidents. Here are two.
In the 60s or very early 70s, an Army LTC was assassinated by German terrorists in front of the IG Farben building in Frankfurt.
In the 80s terrorists blew up an American GI hangout in Berlin.

We average 350-500 bomb incidents annually in America. My point being that a certain amount of terrorism exists in every society...We have to accept some level, while always of course, working to keep it in check.
