If you are using Windows XP pro, the built-in backup utility is hard to beat.

programs/accessories/system tools/backup

You can either click on the backup tab or use the wizard.

I prefer just using the backup tab and putting a check mark beside what i want to backup.

Once you open the backup tab, you can select exactly the data
you want to backup. It will let you save to a network share as well as to an external drive.

I like SyncBack. I use the freeware version. Look at the bottom right of the web page for information about the free version. 2brightsparks.com

BTW, XP home contains the backup utility on the cd. To install it, Insert the XP CD, and run NTBACKUP.MSI program from the folder D:\Valueadd\msft\ntbackup where D: is the letter of your CD drive.

If you are looking to backup your OS and programs, a disk image program like Ghost or Drive Image is a more appropriate tool.
