"If protectionism sinks in there may be even more hell to pay" I guess you haven't noticed that the USA has just essentially abrogated the North American Free Trade Area treaty, by choosing to ignore the decision (on softwood lumber imports from Canada) of the final stage of the formal dispute mechanism. This last stage was one which the US negotiators themselves demanded. Will you now please assure me (with evidence) that the USA is not a totally and selfishly protectionist treaty-breaker? Tony.
