I had feared this. It's time to pull out and just nuke the whole region. There doesn't appear to be any hope. While that is said somewhat tongue in cheek that is truly disappointing news.

Break the damn country into 3 independent pieces. Isolate the Shiites into their own oil free desert and give the Sunnis and Kurds enough weapons to keep them bottled up.

They also said the agreement was only reached under heavy pressure from our ambassador. There are still parts left undone so I guess they could revise it yet again, but this does not appear to be a good sign of things to come.

I've read in a few different places that polls of Iraqi society at-large show that the populace is less intensely religious and more socially "liberal" than the average legislator - I wonder if that will translate into "No" votes at the ballot box, if true.

It's said that whatever the constitution says must be approved by a vote of the people. If the people approve, they have the right to chose.

This time around the woman also have the right to vote.

Bill:

Did women have the vote or the right to own property in 1776 when our country was founded....?

1800 American soldiers didn't die so that Iraq could turn the clock back 600 years and oppress half its population.

Well, maybe they did. Not what they had in mind, I agree.

But the position we've consistently taken is that the Iraqi people must govern their own country in their own way.

Back in the early days of the Iraq war, when people held up Germany and Japan post-WWII as success stories of countries rebuilding after a war, I would mention that pre-war Germany was the most advanced country on the European continent and one of the most advanced countries in the world, as was Japan.

So there was a very strong base to return to, and build on.

Got tired of mentioning it, but it does bear mentioning. No situation is exactly the same as any other situation unless you gloss over the details.

Iraq has a different culture. I don't want to kill more American soldiers in order to attempt to turn Iraq into a European-style democracy. That's not what the US military is for, for one, and second, it won't work.

We told them "draft your own Constitution" and they did.

That is unacceptable.

1800 American soldiers didn't die so that Iraq could turn the clock back 600 years and oppress half its population.

Bill, how do you reconcile the above with your comments that we have accomplished our mission in Iraq and need to leave now?
