Music today is "horrible" because you're not 18 anymore, not because of royalty issues. That is, most people define the period "when music was good" as what they were listening to in between ~18-22. 20 years from now, if you can fast-forward and ask today's 20-somethings when they're 40, they'll tell ya, "Music sucks now in 2025! 'Real music' was back in 2005!". Likewise, if you go back to 1985 and ask 40 year olds, they'd tell ya, "1985 music sucks! 'Real music' was back in 1965!" ... and so on. and so on.
