I mean for gods sake who in their right mind would spend months in a recording session, create a CD that makes 200mm in sales and wind up with 600K in profits like the Dixie Chicks did?

Every unestablished star. That's how the business works. Until you get the sales (from which you hardly (if at all) profit) as a musician you simply have no leverage with the major labels.
