Last I heard, the mandatory age was 70 1/2... But that may have changed in recent legislation, though I don't think it has...

withdrawals of the MRD ("minimum required distribution") must commence by April 30 of the year following the year in which an individual attains age 70-1/2 and continue each year thereafter.

Keep in mind that if you have a Roth IRA there is no date at which you must begin distributions. Actually you could take no distributions, live to the ripe old age of 110(or greater) and then pass on the IRA to your beneficiary.
