Interesting that you point out Ayn Rand's objectivism as a form of group think. I remember someone writing a great article on how urging everyone to be an individual, but in a certain way and for a certain purpose, and for a certain goal, was the ultimate group think.

Just like the car ads where the guy is supposed to step out from the crowd and buy the different car. But they want all the viewers to buy THAT same car...which makes you different? Huh? By telling you you are "different", you become the same.

I have come to the conclusion that group-think makes ordinary people commit the most evil on earth. Group-think is most frequently manifested via organized religion, but communism, ultra-nationalism, Nazism, etc are all examples of group-think.

Agreed. There is some miscommunication occuring between Europe and the US in that area. Europe sees American attitude as nationalism, sic group think, while Americans think Europeans are ridiculing American patriotism. It is sometimes hard to tell the difference.

I used to be an independent and then Independents became a group, so I quit. <s>
