You seem to have misplaced something of value. It may be an irreplaceable heirloom, so I'd recommend retracing your steps. Compassion in truth is principle, not dogma, and in no circumstance will you hold it and tamper with it simultaneously. Will you abandon decency also along the trail, or strive to maintain human nobility through diligent and conscious effort at all costs?
