Alternative could have been like other states, with huge budget deficits and relatively higher tax rates compared to Virginia. It would be interesting to see a state by state tabular compilation of tax burden on an average tax payer. I suspect Virginia might not look bad overall.

But I agree, as a general rule of thumb we should not be giving politicians an easy pass on raising taxes.
