Curiously, I just got an email from a friend, an astronomer. The astronomical observatory that he established has its seeing conditions threatened by encroaching developments in the area you mentioned. Here's what he wrote:

"That certainly is a depressing scenario, but it fits with the impression I have of an incredible number of expensive gigantic homes, everywhere you look in America. The builder who has bought the large tract of land immediately north of the observatory and is developing it told us he only plans to build $500K - $1 million dollar homes and market them in RTP and Cary. This in a time of sky high gas prices, yet. "
