Work is on-going in abiogenesis. Most recently Harvard has set up a research program to address the issue. Oddly enough clay might be an important element in early life per current research, hence those religiously inclined can claim victory regarding God forming man from clay, although "forming" would need to stretch to include 3.5B years of evolution. I'm hoping it turns out that way just for amusement!
