You answered the question I always wanted to ask, but felt it was none of my business to ask: why no advertising here: "we don't WANT to attract non-market advertisers."

While what you say about my feelings about non-market advertising is largely true, it's not completely true and isn't the real reason you don't see ads.

I don't mind non-market advertisers if they're still appropriate for our demographic. Which is largely (but not completely by any means) affluent middle-aged men. I'd LOVE to see upscale auto manufacturers advertising here, for example. However, since ad sales is one of the too-many hats I wear, I haven't the time to go look for those sales. And it's hard to find an experienced ad sales rep who'll work on reasonable commissions. Spent a lot of money on monster.com trying.

The reason you don't see ads is your membership type is one that hides ads.

And the people who do see ads (free members or non-login lurkers) can't post here and for the most come to Silicon Investor looking for market discussion, not political discussion.

You're absolutely right about the history of the Coffee Shop. It was sorely needed because people needed a place to chat about mutual interests outside the market, especially after the close, but the content of the market-specific threads was getting diluted by such discussion.
