Slagle, I have commented previously your strong inclination towards nice and clean narratives. Maybe there is no problem with all the immigrants coming into the US. Maybe it is just your inability to cleanly divide them into neat categories that is making you uncomfortable. Regarding Thugee, could it be that they were the WMDs and Al Qaeda of those times? Don't you see that the West has perfected the art of feel-goodism for centuries? Always define enough bad guys that force you to send your troops out! It works over and over again. >The Brits may have helped the pilgrimage in one regard; they eliminated the religious sect known as the "Thugee" (whose name is the basis of the English word "Thug"). The Thugee would hide in remote places along a roadway and waylay travelers and pilgrims, then ritually murder them as a sacrifice to (I think the Goddess Kali). The Brits put these guys out of business about 1840 and provided the language with a new word at the same time. <g>>
