I'm glad you liked it. Hesse was a hero to me and a couple of friends (brothers). They are dead. My friend (Rick) loved Steppenwolf. He was a doctor's son who became a teacher. He was brilliant and (yet) got addicted to Percodan (wrote his own prescriptions), divorced, and went off the rails. He fitted the character in so many ways and he was beaten to death in a hovel by a character who probably had never (past the age of ten) read a book.

His bother (Kenny) loved Hesse, too. Overdose--perhaps more.

Sometimes authors touch a part where nobody else has touched. Especially in the case of the gifted this will certainly happen. It can lead to the canyon or the hilltop. In the case of my friends it led over the cliff.

But they were suffering so much anyway, that...what? And then that line tonight: "Love your suffering?"

Something to think about...interpretation, I guess.

I am glad you liked it. Did you know Hesse was awarded a Nobel? Here is the list:

en.wikipedia.org

Many of these I have never read. I should start back to my Heritage Book Club, if they are still in business. Or even better, I should start getting back into reading...

"Trashing other posters (no matter how obnoxious you consider the other posters) just makes you look like you have nothing better to do, and that would be sad, and while I would feel compassion for you, I wouldn't want to hang out with you do if you do that."

Looks like that's obviously not true. Sad really (not because of the grammatical error in the header of a thread dedicated to reading) that you just go on as though nothing was happening.
