and I have heard stories like yours from others which is a real silver lining on these high gas prices as I see it. GVTucker on another thread has said the same, that in the early 90s people actually accused the first president Bush of colluding with oil companies to keep prices low to ensure our dependence on foreign oil. Its not like this is the 70s and we are blindsided by the difficulties of dealing with OPEC. We have alternatives like you mention that in many cases have died on the vine. Since the US is mostly a service economy now we should be able to suffer through this oil shock, maybe a mild recession but come out of it better off.

what about the hydrogen vehicles coming out of detroit, are those any good would you say?
