Tradelite,

Agree, but the 80's also were a struggle for Detroit automakers as Japanese cars battled for "top seller". Every year a little market share disappeared.

Detroit quality has come a long way, but they do not lead in innovation. And IMO, the Detroit OEM's focus on some of the incorrect objectives. A personal example would be that there is a product that is a solid 30% cost savings over the standard method used by GM and Ford. This product has been in use since 1987 by Daimler, BMW, VW, Opel, Ford of Europe, and about a dozen other European OEM's. The specs at Ford and GM, and the engineering "willingness" to use this product prevent widespread acceptance. Only in the past two years has GM started serious consideration. Why? Because GM and Ford are focused on the wrong product values, and as a result, the continue to pay 30% more than they have to.

I agree that Ford and GM will survive, but they will be much smaller going forward. Lots of pain for retired and current employees. I do not own any stock in either, and have no intention of ever buying any. Detroit is going to suffer and real estate is going to get wacked hard. We have not had the run that the coasts have had, but much of the gains from the past four or five years are going to be wiped away.

People speculate that some Japanese OEM might someday buy Ford or GM or parts from each. I don't understand the reason that they would do this.
