<I use "industrial revolution" in a very broad sense for the high technological change, high growth era we have been in since the 18th century in some and increasingly more countries. Some of my colleagues talk about 3 different industrial revolutions. In ordinary usage people are probably thinking about 19th century technology.> I see. I use industrial revolution to mean the change to urban life which really got going in the late 19th century and the industrialisation process would accelerated through the 20th century. I consider the industrial revolution as replacing our muscles. I consider the new cyber-revolution to be replacing our brains, and therefore vastly more significant as our brains are where the main action takes place. To me they are quite distinct developments and the cyber-revolution really only got going in the 1990s though IBM had it well underway in the 1970s when people thought IBM was an arch monopolist [which seems quite a giggle now]. Mqurice PS, by replacing our brains, I don't mean making our lives easier as though we have a cyber-servant. I mean rendering us redundant, much as chimpanzees are not an essential component of modern life though I'm sure our chimpoid ancestors were nice chaps in their primitive way. We are creating a new kind of existence. Just as life itself in the formation of DNA was a new kind of existence, being a major step up from rocks and lifeless cosmos.
