My brother bought a pretty big piece of land there about 25 years ago. Never has built anything but a ramshackle cabin.

Beckley is close to the New River Gorge, which is the closest thing in the eastern U. S. to the Grand Canyon, but a Grand Canyon covered with trees. Actually the Gorge was created somewhat like the Grand Canyon, an entrenched river in an uplifted plateau. The elevations in the area make it cool, especially at night, all through the summer.

I originally mentioned the area because whenever I am in Washington between the end of May or the end of September, I seldom enjoy being outside, and I often think how pleasant it would be to have a capital city spread out on that high West Virginia plateau.
