A little on the geography of the situation. Here's a map:

maps.google.com

The large Lake in the center, just north of New Orleans is Lake Ponchartrain. The boot-shaped lake to the east of it is Lake Bourgne (essentially an outlet of the gulf). The road access in and out of the city is constrained by the lakes and to some extent by the Mississippi river, which is why evacuations are usually a mess. They've set up a contraflow system to make all the key highways going out of town, east, west and north, one way during evacuations. But it's still very slow going. If it were me, I'd be leaving today for SURE.<NG>
