[Thanks to the boycott of Japanese goods among some Chinese people]--"Japan’s exports to China rebound, but boom unlikely

TOKYO: Japanese exports to China are picking up pace after months of anaemic growth but are unlikely to reach the booming rate of the past few years, keeping a lid on Japan’s economy.

In addition to brisk exports of plastics and power generators, the long struggling high-tech sector showed signs of bottoming out in July. The rate of year-on-year drop in exports of microchips and other electronics parts — the largest component of exports to China — halved from June.

Still, much of the recovery in technology products was because of reduced inventory and final demand remained soft, analysts say. “Solid progress in inventory adjustment in China is reflected in the export figures. When we see China as one big factory for the world, lighter stockpiles there are a positive development,” said Tadashi Yamamoto, an economist at Bank of Tokyo-Mitsubishi.

“Although inventory tweaking may have almost run its course, I don’t think demand will grow rapidly.” Overall exports to China, which is Japan’s largest trading partner, rose 6.7 percent from a year earlier in July, compared with a gain of 2.2 percent in June and zero growth in May.

The single-digit growth in China-bound exports, however, was a far cry from the 20-percent gains seen until about a year ago. "
