I was just investigating energy efficieny yesterday. I was surprised to learn how much more efficient appliances have become since the 1980s. Many appliances are 50% or more efficient than a generation ago. Of course, as you suggest, insulation and passive cooling like trees is a good route too.

Nobody would have thought much of energy efficiency in decades past, but now it is possible to make a home far more efficient in its energy use with off the shelf appliances and lighting such as compact flouresencents. Once that's done, a solar system necessary to provide home energy needs drops in price significantly.
