Lizzie and others,

A few things:

- Some companies won't go public because SarbOx is too daunting. After finishing a windsurfing session with a friend of mine who is a founder of startup that is making money, I asked him why he hasn't gone public yet because I remembered that the I-bankers were chasing him just like a skit out of "Benny Hill." He said that SarbOx has made it too costly. He said that when his CFO was talking to the auditing chief, it was the auditor who was asking why he should take the work from my friend's company! The money is there.

- I don't know if it's your engineering world or mine that is narrowly defined. The Bay Area has recovered quite well. Not back to the highs of yesterday, but I'm thankful for that. I don't know anyone with a modicum of education who wants a job that doesn't have one. I have no idea what's going on with IT workers in the rest of the country. I'm not sure what qualifies as an IT worker anymore, I guess. From what I've read, offshoring is not the silver bullet many companies planned on. However, there is definite a slow drip away from the U.S. I believe that the CEO calls for more work visas are simply to keep pressure on the U.S. engineers, IMO, as I believe that engineers around here are "abused." (note quotes). You want more engineers, pay them more. The U.S. engineering schools are still the best in the world, the graduates deserve better.

- I didn't have a chance to drive around San Mateo yesterday, as it was not all that windy. However, I spoke to my friends "Eddie" and "Betty" who live in Burlingame (next town up 101). I asked them if they saw lots of places for rent in their area as they were looking for a place for Betty's parents last month. They said not many houses, but lots of apartments. These two are not the same. It has been my experience that the even the addition of hundreds of apartment units had little effect on the rental or sale price of houses around here. JMO.
