I know what you mean. Lately I've driven through some small Montana towns that are just crushingly dull. If it weren't for the nearby mountains, they would be unbearable. I wouldn't live in those towns, but there are wonderful alternatives with every cultural advantage you could ever want.

Living in Juneau was an odd compromise. In three minutes I could get to the grocery, the library, and almost anything I needed. Ten minutes to the airport, twenty to downtown. I could watch mountain goats from my porch -- and from my office. Bears bedded down across from K-Mart. Wilderness just across the street in full view. No middle ground that you could get to without getting in a plane or a boat.

KLP, Move to Issaquah. Close, small town feeling and quick to mountains.
