Well said Dave. I would encourage you to implement something
regarding permanent bans too. Heck, I'm banned on 7 threads,
yet I never violated SI's TOU or established thread guidelines
(at the time of the ban) on any of the threads where I'm banned.
Meanwhile, I've had those 7 bans thrown in my face as proof
of me being a horrible person on SI.

"That's not to say there are not moderators (and participants) who prefer to have only like-minded discourse on their thread, which is perfectly acceptable since anyone can start another thread on the same topic."

It may be perfectly acceptable to you (wearing your SI Admin
hat). But it's also quite hypocritical when those threads
that do not identify themselves as "prefer(ing) to have only
like-minded discourse on their thread" - even more so when a
thread specifically claims "All opinions are welcome here",
ET AL.

And that point is most likely the major reason for all 7 of
my bans.

"I agree. That wasn't the point I was addressing."

Would you like to address it??

"Yes. I wasn't addressing that point either."

Would you like to address it??

"The majority of users would prefer to discuss their positions on the merits, but others can't settle for that so they resort to name-calling, threats, vulgarity"...

So why should the thread head be able to do what he/she pleases while having control over others? Surely, the "other" can start a thread and then ban his/her oppressor--but, so what?? That is a game--RIGHT?? A waste of "band-width".

I think you are making this far too complicated. Let people discuss as they wish. Forget creating "an overwhelming task for site admins". Tweak your TOU's a bit...and make ALL your TOU bans limited--as if we were all human beings. Murder may deserve "LIFE". Talking back to somebody and expressing an opinion does NOT. If you are not a religious cult, then please do not act like one.

You are not Gods. Just relax and let people be people. You will get back all the people whom have left you and (more important)...you will be viewed as being FAIR, DECENT, AND ABOVE BOARD.
