Thanks again, Nadine. My sister in Mobile says that she has been through this on many occasions during the past 77 years and has always come through with little loss of sleep. (She lives about 15 miles inland from the Gulf, just North of Mobile proper.)

Thank heaven for the modern weather service. It's not even raining yet in New Orleans. No wonder these big hurricanes used to take people completely by surprise.

The 1900 Galveston storm is an example:

I read the book "Issac's Storm" a few years back. Highly recommended account of the storm and how it took people totally by surprise.
